Are You Thinking About Applying For Early Social Security Retirement Benefits?

Too many early retirees fall into the Early Social Security Retirement Benefits trap. I do not want you to become another victim.

If you have health problems and think early retirement is the only option – you are WRONG. I urge you to be RESOURCEFUL!

Why am I urging you to be resourceful? Because you can have more than one bite of the apple.

Most people in your situation do not realize they can file two separate applications for Social Security Benefits at the same time. Yes, that is correct. Not only that, but by doing so they set-up a progressive financial benefit. This approach can also substantially increase your Social Security Lifetime Benefit!

PIGGYBACK CLAIMS

The strategy of filing both applications can be thought of as a piggyback claim

Under the piggyback claim strategy, the applicant files the following applications simultaneously:

- Early Social Security Retirement (SSR)

- Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD)

WILL THIS WORK FOR ME?

For this to work – you must prove that you met the criteria for SSD prior to collecting SSR.

Allow me to summarize how piggyback claims are handled procedurally:

 1.     You will submit two applications for benefits to the Social Security Administration (SSA).

  • SSR Application for Benefits

  • SSD Application for Benefits

 2.     The SSR application will be processed first.

  • You will receive your SSR until your disability application is approved.

  • This ensures a monthly financial benefit while you are awaiting a determination on your disability application.

  • This is your lowest benefit. You will only receive this benefit for a short time.

3.     You worked with a Disability Expert when you submitted your SSD application for consideration. This means that your application will be expedited through the approval process.

  • Your SSR will be converted to the higher benefit.

  • You will be eligible for Medicare twenty-nine (29) months after you are determined disabled. You may also qualify for Medicaid, please check with your state to be sure.

  • You may be eligible for return-to-work programs. This means that you will NOT be penalized for working.

  • This is your median benefit that you will receive until you reach Full Retirement Age (FRA).

4.     Once you reach FRA, your disability benefit will be converted to your FULL Social Security Retirement benefit. It is like you never filed for early retirement!

  • You cannot receive SSD once you reach FRA.

  • This will be your highest benefit and you will receive this benefit for the rest of your life!

Do you realize the challenges that you are able to overcome with the piggyback strategy?

  • It takes a long time to receive an SSD approval. You have probably heard, “You will be denied twice, and you will have to hire a lawyer to win disability benefits.” The traditional application process normally takes two to three years to receive a proper disability determination. That is a long time to survive without a monthly income!

  • There is also a five month waiting period before you are eligible for a monthly financial benefit.  You must wait an additional five months after you are awarded disability to receive a monthly payment. That means that applicants must wait a little longer to receive money.

Instead, with a piggyback claim, you will enjoy your early-retirement benefits quickly with a plan to increase your monthly benefit over time.

  • You will receive SSR until you are eligible for disability benefits. You eliminated the five-month waiting period for SSD and you preserved your FULL retirement benefit.

  • BONUS: SSA encourages claimants to return to work. You may be eligible to work while receiving disability benefits. (You are penalized for excessive earnings while receiving SSR.)

  • JACKPOT: There is a twenty-nine-month waiting period for Medicare. Usually, the waiting period for Medicare is exhausted while waiting for a disability approval due to delays and errors within SSA.

What do you think? Did you know about the piggyback claim strategy?

You can do it. But it is risky. If your application for SSD is denied – then you are stuck with the Early SSR for the rest of your life and you will have to wait until you are 65 to apply for Medicare.
